Grow Zambia:

Land Life Company, a fast-growing nature restoration venture, will kick off the multi-stakeholder project, Grow Zambia, in the first week of October. This hybrid reforestation
and education project brings together the local community of Chokola, UNICEF’s Climate Ambassadors and their teachers, the Munali Nickel Mine and the Musangu Foundation with the common goal to reforest degraded land and improve the lives of Zambia’s next generation.
Zambia has the 2nd highest deforestation rate per capita in Africa and with 50% of the
Zambian population under 18 years old, a combined approach of education, reforestation and local ownership is required to turn the tide on land degradation.
Grow Zambia aims to restore degraded land by planting 6,000 trees with Land Life Company’s unique Cocoon technology. All trees will be grown locally by Trees4Zambia, and are suited to the local climate, soil condition and can cope with periods of drought. The Cocoon will also be used as part of UNICEF’s Unite4Climate education program across Zambia, bringing 10,000 children the tools and knowledge to become environment ambassadors in their local community.
Vicki Partridge, Fundraising Director Musangu Foundation explains; “The Musangu Foundation is partnering with Land Life Company and UNICEF’s Unite4Climate education programme to highlight the need for rural communities to understand the importance of their environment, and to preserve the forests for future generations. We are delighted to work with Land Life’s innovative Cocoon solution to growing strong saplings, which protects the young tree, and provides water and nutrients during the early months of growth, giving
them a higher survival rate.”
October 4th will mark the official kick off of the Grow Zambia project, with a festive Community Day celebration in Chokola Village, Mazabuka. In the presence of district officials, UNICEF Climate Ambassadors from around the country, mine management, local press and local schools, His Royal Highness Chief Naluama will plant the first tree and bless the success of the reforestation effort.
More pictures and updates will follow once the first trees are planted in October, the planting will take place over two phases and will be complete by April 2018.
